Who this is for

Sydney businesses buying equipment, vehicles, plant or fit-outs where paying cash would strain working capital.

Trucks, utes and commercial vehicles for trades and transport businesses
Yellow goods, forklifts, construction and manufacturing machinery
Dental chairs, medical equipment, physio and allied health fit-outs
Hospitality fit-outs - kitchen equipment, bar, cold rooms, point-of-sale
IT equipment, laptops, servers, phone systems
Office fit-outs including furniture and partitioning

The real challenge

Equipment purchases are usually the wrong thing to pay cash for - every dollar in a truck is a dollar not supporting payroll, stock or BAS. But the product you choose (chattel mortgage vs lease vs hire purchase) has a big tax impact: chattel mortgage lets you claim depreciation and GST upfront; finance lease treats repayments as deductible; operating lease keeps the asset off balance sheet.

Picking the wrong product can cost you several thousand dollars in tax over the term. Picking the wrong lender can cost you 1-3 percentage points on the rate.

How Mortgagefy helps

Right product for your tax position. We walk through chattel mortgage vs finance lease vs operating lease vs hire purchase with your accountant to pick the one that minimises your total cost over the term.
No-doc / low-doc options for self-employed with strong credit. For most equipment under $150k, lenders accept credit-score-only underwriting (no financials required) - approval in hours.
Full-doc for larger amounts. Over $150k typically needs BAS and 12 months bank statements. We prepare the file so decisions are fast.
Honest residual-value guidance. If you're considering a lease with a residual (balloon), we show you the true cost including the residual payment.

Frequently asked questions

Chattel mortgage vs finance lease - which is better?

Chattel mortgage: you own the asset from day one; claim depreciation and GST upfront. Finance lease: lessor owns the asset; your repayments are fully deductible. Chattel mortgage usually wins for GST-registered businesses buying GST-inclusive equipment; finance lease can win for off-balance-sheet reasons or where the asset depreciates fast. Your accountant should sign off.

What's a hire purchase?

Hire purchase: you pay instalments and ownership transfers at the end. Historically popular but largely superseded by chattel mortgage, which gives you ownership immediately and better tax treatment. Still exists for some legacy structures and specific lenders.

How much can I finance without providing financials?

Most lenders will approve $100k-$150k on credit-score alone (ABN 2+ years, GST registered, no adverse credit). Over that typically needs 12 months BAS + bank statements. Over $500k usually needs full financials and tax returns.

Can I finance a used vehicle?

Yes - most lenders fund used trucks, cars and plant up to 10 years old at settlement (so loan paid out before year 15). Older than 10 years is possible with specialist lenders at higher pricing.

What's the typical rate on equipment finance?

Rates vary by lender, asset type, age, loan size, LVR and your credit profile. For a current indicative rate on your specific scenario, call us; we won't publish a stale number here. Rates are typically higher for used equipment, older assets, lower deposits and weaker credit profiles.

Do I need a deposit?

Common deposit: 10-20% for new, 20-30% for used, 0% for strong-credit profiles on new vehicles. Zero-deposit is available but pushes the LVR to 100% of the drive-away price, which can leave you underwater if you sell early.

What's a balloon payment / residual?

A lump sum payable at the end of the term (typically 20-40% of the original cost for vehicles). Lowers your monthly payment but you owe the balloon at expiry - either pay it, refinance it, or sell the asset to cover it. Fine when planned, dangerous when not.
